EXOTICS
Spotted less than a mile from La Villa Sanabria, this oryx is among the “exotic” species introduced by the King Ranch and other large ranches for hunting in the late 1970’s to South Texas. Originally from North Africa, this particular species of oryx has become extinct in all of Africa leaving the herds that occupy Jim Hogg County, Texas and surrounding border lands among the last of their kind on earth.
Arabian oryxes are being reintroduced to the wild and protected in wealthy Gulf Arab nations like the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, but in smaller numbers. These scimitar-horned oryxes that roam Jim Hogg County were declared extinct in their native Africa in the year 2000 meaning South Texas is the last stand for this species of oryx to live in the wild left in the world.
